Something I find interesting: people are quick to hate on Mori for the things he’s done, but they treat Chuuya like he’s some sort of cinnamon roll who deserves better, when really, they aren’t that different.
Yes, Mori relies on his intellect and he’s manipulative while Chuuya is more of a ‘brawn’ type of guy. But all the things Mori has done until now were for the sake of the Port Mafia, whether it’s for them to become more powerful or for it to remain stable and not fall into chaos.
Mori killed his predecessor because he was a danger to both Yokohama and the Port Mafia; he had Oda get into a conflict with Mimic so the Port Mafia would get a special ability permit; he refused to be killed by Fukuzawa because if he died, there’d be panic and bloodshed: it’d be a disaster for the Port Mafia and Yokohama. Yes, he obtains his goals in the most questionable of means, but he doesn’t do it for himself. He’s always done those things for the sake of the Port Mafia.
And that’s something he has in common with Chuuya. Because Chuuya is extremely loyal to Mori and the Port Mafia in that he’ll do anything without so much as complaining. And with anything I mean anything. It’s canon that he’s killed a lot of people and he doesn’t appear to have any problems with it whatsoever. Also, while he isn’t half as manipulative as Mori is, he isn’t above using trickery to achieve goals either: he’s perfectly fine with ‘not playing fair’.
Also, when talking about Soukoku dynamics, keep in mind that Chuuya isn’t really the ‘victim’ some people portray him to be. This guy was ready to murder Dazai in cold blood if it weren’t for the fact that he’d get himself killed in the process. While it’s mostly Dazai who ‘uses’ him, Chuuya still taunts him and beats him up as he pleases. Half of it is probably caused by pent up frustration because Dazai’s always been messing with him, but still, he can fend for himself. Dazai is cruel, but so is Chuuya. Just because he has shown care for his subordinates doesn’t mean he’s inherently a good or honorable person.
Chuuya is my favorite character and that probably won’t change (please give my boy some character development). It’s his gray morality and ruthlessness that make him more interesting to me, and the same goes for Mori. I used to not like Mori much but I grew to like him because he’s a very interesting, complex (if not one of the most complex in BSD) character. I get that people hate him for what he did to the Buraiha trio, but I don’t think some of the hate he gets is justified, especially considering the fact that Chuuya is one of the most popular characters in the fandom when they have very similar intentions and morals.
tldr; Mori gets lots of flack for things he’s done while Chuuya is often coddled by fandom when both characters’ motives are pretty much the same except they use different methods.
