Remembering the actual Ronald Reagan.

He let more people die of AIDS than died in the vietnam war before saying the word AIDS publicly and the same year he finally mentioned it he cut the NIH’s budget by 23% BUT HE DIDN’T TAKE NO SHIT FROM ANYBODY

^^^

(Every time I see this post, though, I’m baffled by the charisma thing. I grew up in the Reagan/Thatcher era, and I remember Reagan having all the charisma of a piece of string.)

My dad interestingly said similar about Trump: that he makes his base feel good about themselves and so they don’t really care about the brass tacks of what he’s doing, they just want to be made to feel good. He also thinks a lot of them are mad because they wanted this to be Reagan Admin 2.0 but the media are doing less of a job of letting Trump get away with it and so his supporters are not allowed to bask in how his rhetoric makes them feel good (regardless of what he’s doing) because they can’t have that feel good bubble as easily as they want to. Like even if they scream Russia is nothingburger till the cows come home, there’s still the unaddressed Opioid Crisis, issues to the Harvey and Irma responses in TX and FL, the outright humanitarian crisis in PR, Ivanka and Jared constantly showing themselves to be unqualified and trying to enrich themselves, the Nazis, the recent shit with Price and all the dudes who got booted before him, the insanity with NK, and so much more.

They’re mad they can’t have their feel good times because reality with its well known liberal bias keeps butting in.

They didn’t want a presidency. They wanted a feel good TV show to prop themselves up with how “great” their guy was. And as the San Juan mayor angrily called out, this is not good TV, this is a really life situation that for some is actual life and death and the want to just turn it into a story instead of real shit with real consequences ain’t gonna fly.
