Kennedy was the swing vote in upholding Roe v Wade and Ogerbefell.
Trump gets to replace him with someone way to the right, so the right to choose and gay marriage are basically gone for an entire generation. Voting Rights aren’t coming back. Citizens United isn’t going away.
SCOTUS could conceivably overturn Lawrence v. Texas with this balance and God knows what else. The recriminalization of homosexuality is a real political possibility now.
It’s very scary, my friends, but we can’t go backward. We have to fight. First, we raise holy hell with those elected officials… McConnell and Grassley (that prick) in particular. But we make them listen to our screaming. Make them regret having run.
Then we vote in November. REGISTER NOW. Know where your polling place is. Don’t let the fact that you’re in a solidly red place deter you… if we show up in great enough numbers we can flip the chambers and make Trump’s life a living hell. Why, we could even impeach him AND Clarence Thomas, and set things a little right.
My old college buddy wrote this. He’s right. The other thing we can do is take care of each other. Many straight folks are allies, and many will help. Many good men are feminists and understand what protecting women’s health means. Lots of white people are sickened by the racism exposed by this administration. And there are many with influence who understand how poverty is ruining us.
It’s a turning point, my friends. A new birth. Births can have labor pains, but we can honestly bring about the world we want if we hang onto each other, lock arms, and march on over their bullshit.
Let me reemphasize this: take care of each other. They don’t want to take care of us, so we should take care of each other.
