shout out to the kids who worked their asses off in school and still got Cs, Ds, and sometimes Fs. who were overjoyed to get a B. who were pretty sure they got an A on a test once, a few years ago, maybe.

shout out to the kids who dropped out. kids who couldnt focus on school because they had other shit going on in their lives. kids who just couldn’t get themselves to care. kids who had disabilities or other barriers to their learning.

you’re rad af. the school system isn’t designed for everyone. just because you don’t learn a certain way doesn’t mean you’re not smart

fun fact: Michael Cera asked Rihanna if he could slap her ass for real and she said “you can slap my ass for real if I can slap you in the face for real” and he was like alright. and they did the take like 3 times and Michael was like “you’re not hitting me hard enough do it for real” and then she slapped the fuck out of him and threw off his equilibrium so much he had to go lay down in his trailer for like half an hour lmao and that’s the take they used in the movie with no added sound effects

Friendly October reminder not to put Spock or other Jewish characters in costumes with horns

to clarify: it is an antisemitic idea that Jews have horns (dating to a mistranslation of karan (shone) v keren (horns) ) which was perpetuated in art by the likes of Michelangelo. this is not a thing of the past–some gentiles still believe that jewish people have horns, and putting jewish characters in costumes/aus with horns is insensitive at best and also really fuckin gross

also do not depict Jewish characters as demons there is a very long history of Jews being seen as demons and that being used to kill us

please do not dress Jewish characters in costumes that are priest outfit or nun outfit or with crosses

Just to give y’all an idea of how modern the horn issue is: My dad, when he went to college in the early 1980’s, was asked by someone who had never met a Jew before where his horns were. In the 1980’s. My dad was asked where his horns were. This was only 30 years ago. I have been lucky not to deal with that particular stereotype in my lifetime, but that was less than a decade before I was born. And I know other Jews in areas where Jews are scarce have dealt with this much more recently than the 80’s.

Yup. When my mom went to college, her freshman year roommate woke up the first Sunday and started getting dressed for church. My mom was still in bed, so the roommate came over and woke her up.

Roommate: Did you want to come to church with me, or do you have your own church you’re going to?

Mom: Well, I don’t really go to religious services, but if I did I would go to a synagogue, not a church, because I’m Jewish.

(Long silence. My mom opens one eye to see her roommate staring in shock.)

Roommate: You … you don’t look Jewish.

Mom: (Who looks VERY Jewish) What do you mean?

Roommate: Well, my pastor always told me that Jews have horns and a tail.

Long story short: they didn’t end up getting along very well.

@optometrictzedek and @theforestsoulbird, it’s more recent than that.

I’ve been asked about my horns as recently as 1997.  In a public school in New Jersey.

It would b cool of my non-Jewish followers to reblog this!!! Spread this bc it’s scary and real and you should know!

allthecanadianpolitics:

I’ve been thinking lately about the issues that Centre-Left and Leftwing parties in Canada have with being elected.

I don’t think it has that much to do with what they’re proposing as most of the policies established by these parties exist in many other countries with progressive governments (particularly in Northern Europe).

I don’t even think the issue is of myths spread about these parties about supposed fiscal mismanagement (even though most of these points are outright lies created by the Right and gleefully shared by Centrists).

I think the main issue is that in order for these parties to gain support, the people must be convinced that Canada has major systematic problems surrounding social issues.

And frankly I don’t think many Canadians are comfortable believing that there are major issues of poverty, racism, income inequality and sexism in our society. Heck Canada has one of the worst universal healthcare systems in the world, but we’re fine with that because at least we’re not the USA.

In Canada Liberals at best are just trying to stick with the status quo or make tiny tweaks here and there, as we’re facing crises of poverty and anti-native racism. Conservatives on the other hand are pretending there are no systematic issues in Canada and if we just killed ‘big government’ and got rid of the Liberals and their ‘bad policies’ that we’d be in a utopia. Its a huge joke.

It shows that many in the USA are having a more adult conversation around race, income inequality and social disparities than Canada despite the USA’s politics being shifted so far to the right in comparison. Many of the Democratic Socialist candidates in the USA are being more widely accepted than even slightly left policies in Canada. The NDP is accused of being a communist and creating a class war for daring to propose taxes on unused luxury mansions, and for raising the minimum wage to $15/hour (that’s only $11.71 in US Dollars!)

I’m just really getting sick of Canadians and their smugness, when they point fingers at the USA and not even blinking as we’re getting screwed left and right by Centrists and Conservatives, and our only option to make things better languish in a permanent 3rd place, discounted for being too ‘radical’.

These same people who are blaming the NDP or Quebec Solidaire for being too radical, are completely open to electing the Doug Ford’s of this country who have been gutting climate change policies, overriding the constitution, imposing austerity, cutting sex education back decades and appointing insiders to government positions. But of courses that’s not radical, that’s just Conservatism. =/

The part about Canadians not believing we have social issues is 100000000% accurate. “Haha, we’re not the US, look at Trump, haha!” Meanwhile Indigenous people are still being murdered by white citizens *and* by the State, still being removed from their lands, still being incarcerated at disproportional rates, their women still missing and murdered. There is no justice.

Black folks are still being incarcerated at disproportional rates, racial profiling and police brutality are thriving.

Don’t get me started on the islamophobia, the xenophobia, the shit other POC face, antisemitism, systemic sexism and misogyny, poverty getting worse and worse, crises in homelessness in most major cities (where it isn’t affordable to live anyway).

Quebec citizens specifically keep asking for change but then go around and elect a party that has no interest in addressing the problems that actually relate to them, ‘cause fuck competence and facts and actual fucking change when your leader is as racist as you are, right?

I’m so fucking tired.
