TIL in 2010, after the devastating earthquake, Haiti was provided by Monsanto 475 tons of seeds to help people who lost their sources of income. Haitians burned as many as possible because they were genetically modified.

via reddit.com

This needs more context. The Monsanto seed was free, true, but required millions of dollars worth of Roundup to grow properly, (not free,) and one of the first genetic modifications allows Monsanto to produce seeds which will not produce fertile offspring. Haiti would have been desperate for seed next growing season. Several developing nations are essentially offer a barrel for Monsanto after taking “free” seed.

Haiti wasn’t stupid. They know colonizer tactics.

Just like Nestle giving mothers “”””free”””” formula so that they’d stop producing milk and become dependent on it to feed their children

Nothing from a corporation is free.

If you lose interest in someone, tell them.

If you’re not looking for a relationship, tell the person you’re seeing.

If you’re thinking of ghosting someone, tell them.

If you can’t handle meeting up with someone after all, tell them.

If you’re terrible at responding to messages, tell people.

If you prefer talking in person to texting, tell people.

If you’re seeing several people at the same time, tell them.

If you’re looking for sex rather than dating, tell the person you’re seeing.

It is not difficult to be a decent and honest, open, communicative human being. Respect those whom you interact with and have relationships with by telling the truth instead of leading them on or being deceitful.

hot take: moms need to learn how to listen to and comfort their daughters without making everything about their own traumas

a classic example

daughter: hey this thing you do bothers me very much and i wish you wouldn’t do it

mom: well my parents abused me and im not even as bad as they were and i had to sit through it so you gotta sit through whatever i do to you too

a common variant

mom: well i’m having a really hard time right now and you know that i’m doing my best and that i didn’t mean to hurt you ergo you are in fact the asshole for asking me to consider your feelings and change my behavior during this hard hard time i’m having

See also: i know i made you upset but you need to appologise for makeing me feel guilty for makeing you upset. What me? I should appologize??? Oh my god stop being upset and appologize to me!!

Also, while I’m in a garbage mood, let’s not retroactively attack people for loving Harry Potter because of JK Rowling’s Unfortunate Choices long after the series was published.

Since I’ve been doing a lot of JK Rowling discourse on my blog recently it seems worth sharing this and saying that I have absolutely nothing against fans of Harry Potter! I am a fan of Harry Potter!! Harry Potter meant a lot to so many people, it wasn’t and isn’t perfect but that doesn’t change the fact that without it I wouldn’t have fallen in love with magic and I wouldn’t be here writing the queer fantasy stories that I am now.

My post was only ever intended to mean that a). stop attacking people who don’t like JK and b). here are some of the valid reasons why we don’t like JK.

Also, while I can no longer support what JK does (by which I mean the bad decisions she keeps making in the present), I don’t think turning to old white men for your fantasy is any better. So here is a list of some awesome ladies in fantasy who you could read if you wanna:

  • Tomi Adeyemi
  • NK Jimisin
  • Rin Chupeco
  • Zoraida Cordova
  • VE Schwab
  • Leigh Bardugo

Those are just a few off the top of my head (and some write own voices characters of colour, queer characters or both too!) Happy reading folks ❤

BLESS YOU because people keep telling us to go read Tolkien and I’m just like “You mean the Grandfather of Racism and Misogyny in Fantasy?” If you simply must read white man fantasy, go read Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman.

To your most excellent list, I’d love to add:

  • Renée Ahdieh
  • Lana Popović
  • Naomi Novik
  • Erin Morgenstern
  • Traci Chee
  • Kendare Blake
  • Madeline Miller
  • Marie Brennan
  • Melissa Albert
  • Carmen Machado
  • Rae Carson
  • Gail Carson Levine
  • Kristin Cashore

These are the ones I skimmed off of a couple of bookshelves. I’d also love to add Tamora Pierce and Maggie Stiefvater to this list, but I thought I heard something about them being problematic somehow?

I’ve already reblogged with my list of women writers, and Stiefvater is on it. People have issues with her because she depicts teenaged boys in a way that includes all the casual homophobic comments, and some think the depiction of Henry Cheng was racist. And people are miffed at her for not addressing sexuality by name, but still having characters make homophobic comments. I do think Maggie is a self-aware writer and has said she intends to do better in her future writing, which is more than can be said about JK Rowling, tbh.

Oooh great list, I’ll have to check some more of these authors out, I think a fair analysis of Maggie too (she’s not perfect by any means but who is, and she definitely appears to take criticism into account). Also loving the Gaiman and Pratchett comment, the only straight white men of fantasy I’ll stan.

I think Rick Riordan is a good edition for the white male fantasy author but GOSH LOOK AT ALL THESE NEW AUTHORS TO CHECK OUT I am AMPED

Because my list has gotten lost in the shuffle, here it is:

  • E.J. Swift
  • Laini Taylor
  • Samantha Shannon
  • Libba Bray
  • Madeleine L’Engle
  • Ursula LeGuin
  • Alexandra Bracken
  • Tessa Gratton
  • Maggie Stiefvater
  • Anna-Marie McLemore
  • Kiersten White
  • Kerri Maniscalco
  • Melinda Salisbury
  • Lauren James

Oooh yes Rick is a good example of a white guy fantasy author, especially the way he’s uplifting marginalised authors work through his press.

And I love this list too, definitely some I’ve read and adored on there but lots of new names too.

Please read Diana Wynne Jones! Her Chronicles of Chrestomanci series is great, and of course Howl’s Moving Castle is amazing (its sequel House of Many Ways is great too, though I can’t speak for the 2nd in the series, which is in between those two. They’re all to do with different characters, so you can read them in any order).

If you want a pretty good live example of the kind of homophobic rhetoric that the split attraction model helps to propogate, look at the current Sesame Street fiasco.

Bert & Ernie are confirmed gay by their creator. Sesame Street races to put out a statement on how “puppets aren’t sexual at all actually uwu”… even though the original confirmation said absolutely nothing about sex, because these are Sesame Street characters. “These two men are in a relationship” immediately became “these dudes fuck each other”, and by extension, something you need to prevent your children from seeing.

When you insist on using a system that mandates immediate disclosure and clarification of our sex lives as separate from our romantic interests, this is the kind of mindset that’s being enabled – the age-old homophobic assumption that we’re kinks first and humans last.

> that the split attraction model helps to propogate

> the age-old homophobic assumption that we’re kinks first and humans last

Would you all PLEASE pay attention to what you’re responding to because I explicitly do not say that the Sesame Street thing was caused by ace discourse (wtf), I am talking about how:

> a system that mandates immediate disclosure and clarification of our sex lives as separate from our romantic interests

Ie. “biromantic” meaning LOVE where “bisexual” apparently doesn’t necessarily mean that?

Is just a new “progressive” way of enforcing stereotypes that have existed for a much, much longer time.

You can talk about your personal experiences with attraction without justifying language that inherently sexualizes lgbt people, because it contributes to a problem larger than your pet discourse.
